BPI Announces New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the International Biodegradable Products Institute, Inc. (BPI) are pleased to announce the appointment of Rhodes Yepsen as Executive Director. Yepsen is an accomplished expert in both biodegradable products and the composting industries. During the last 5 years Yepsen has worked for Novamont, as North American marketing manager, during which time he served on the Board of Directors at the US Composting Council and BPI. Yepsen brings with him many strong relationships throughout the bioplastics and composting world.

The BPI was founded in 1999 by retiring Executive Director Steve Mojo, and a group of a key companies. The mission of the BPI is to promote the production, use and appropriate end of lives for materials and products that are designed to fully biodegrade in specific biologically active environments, such as industrial composting. BPI’s role to date has primarily been as a certification authority, and currently has over 180 members from North America, Europe and Asia, using the BPI Compostable Logo on over 4,900 products.

“This is a fantastic opportunity, and I look forward to building on BPI’s strong history,” says Yepsen. “The biodegradable and compostable products industry is poised for significant growth, and BPI plays a critical role in assuring that this happens responsibly, with independent certification and vetting. The BPI is already the authority on compostable product certification in the US, and in this new era of increased state and local interest in diverting organics from disposal, we’ll be working with all stakeholders, including composters, municipalities, and manufacturers, to ensure that certified products help meet these needs.”

About BPI

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is a not-for-profit organization that educates, advocates, and certifies materials as compostable in large-scale composting facilities. All certified products and materials must meet ASTM D6400 or D6868 test requirements, as performed in a BPI-approved laboratory, whose results are then certified by an independent third party. The BPI is the largest certification organization for compostable products in North America and its Compostable Logo is recognized by composters and manufacturers across the continent.
