Technical Advisor, Biodegradable Products Institute

Location: Remote, must be located in United States

About: The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) operates North America's leading certification for compostable products and packaging.  Our goal is the scalable diversion of organic waste to composting, by verifying that products and packaging will successfully break down in professionally managed composting facilities, without harming the quality of that compost.



Reports to Executive Director.  Provide overall technical/scientific support to BPI’s certification program, including but not limited to:

1.    Support development of BPI’s certification schemes — commercial composting, and in the future soil biodegradable mulch film and others (frequent committee calls with Members)

2.    Assist BPI in monitoring of international standards, and active balloting of ASTM D6400 and D6868 (some travel required)

3.    Review of formulas requiring complicated tests for certification, advising BPI in response to laboratories and/or BPI’s technical reviewer 

4.    Guidance on issues related to a transparency in chemicals policy (e.g., fluorinated chemicals testing)


Qualifications and Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or similar
  • 10+ years work experience
  • Familiarity with ASTM D6400 and D6868

Confidentiality and Conflicts of Interest

  • Due to the nature of working with confidential information, the Advisor would have to sign strict non-disclosure agreements and conflict of interest forms, prohibiting them from actively working directly with BPI’s Members or companies pursing BPI certification 


  • Commensurate with experience, to be paid as a monthly retainer (for approximately 20 hours/month)
